In the autumn 2024 another project, "Asuttava Päijät-Häme" (Habitability at Päijät-Häme), was launched in Mallusjoki. The goal of this synergy project is to generate information on the habitability of the villages in Päijät-Häme using the habitability concept developed by Åbo Akademi University. In 2024, the area had 956 residents and approximately 100 summer cottages. The entire Päijät-Häme region had 204,663 residents and around 25,000 summer cottages in 2024 (stat.fi).

The purpose of the Habitability at Päijät-Häme - project is to promote the livability of remote communities by researching and developing sustainable solutions that address the specific needs of these communities. Information is being gathered together with residents, businesses, and other regional stakeholders.

We held the first workshop evening in Mallusjoki, which focused on habitability and the identity of the place. The workshop discussed the area's population and multi-location living, and their impact on the region. The topic was interesting and sparked a lot of discussion. During the workshop, we also collected data on the area's accommodation opportunities, their attractiveness, and economic impact.

It would be useful to develop targeted policy measures that support a synergistic relationship between urban and rural areas, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by multi-location and visitors.

Workshops for knowledge exchange and ideation

A total of seven workshops will take place in the spring of 2025. We are looking forward to the results of the research and stakeholder cooperation!
