In Malta, where every patch of fertile land is precious, the challenge of access to agricultural land is as much social and economic as it is environmental. During the MaYA Agri-Tech Ideathon, part of the PoliRuralPlus project - Mobilise Call, participants tackled this pressing issue head-on.

The “From Soil to Society” group explored how to make Malta green again, not through a single app, but by rethinking land as shared infrastructure for food security. Their discussions focused on:

  • High land prices and speculative use of agricultural land,
  • Underused plots and greenhouses that could be returned to production, and
  • The need for better data, education, and public engagement on how land is used.

Rather than developing a single digital product, the group called for a systemic approach combining visibility on available land, transparent rules, and community participation in shaping land-use decisions.

As noted in the Ideathon’s closing summary, participants emphasised the need to “look beyond individual fields and think in terms of land as shared infrastructure for food security.”
